Maxtor disc

Hello,



my pc has died and i am trying to get all my pics and music off my Maxtor disc so i purchased a sata to usb set and have hooked this up. my new pc sees the disc on disc j but every time i click into it either says i need to format the disc or it has an incorrect parameter any help how i can get into the disc please
