Remove write protection

Hello,
i am using windows 7 ultimate as o.s
when ever i attach any external hardware like pen drive (usb flash drive) or portable hard disk, it works properly...but it don't allow me to copy some things form computer to portable drive..nither allow me to format it
it shows me the message like THE DISK IS WRITE PROTECTED
PLZ TELL ME ....HOW TO REMOVE IT
