Hi canman,
Follow the steps below to determine if the issue is with the Optical Drive (DVD Drive):
1. Check if this happens only with one particular type of disc(s) or it happens with all discs. If this is common to every disc then follow the steps below.
2. There is a utility available on Microsoft's website (see the link below), try running this utility and see if the issue is still there. If the issue continues follow the next step.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2970908/how-to-use-microsoft-easy-fix-solutions
3. Download and install the latest Firmware for optical drive and BIOS from DVD manufacturer's website and motherboard manufacturer's website respectively. If the Firmware and BIOS are not available for download from their respective websites use the CD/DVD that was shipped with the optical drive and motherboard respectively.
4. Also try using different CD/DVD playback software (such as Power DVD).
5. If you have similar computer (friend's computer probably) to which you can connect this optical drive, try connecting it. If it works fine in that machine, then you should do and Operating System reinstallation (such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 etc.). If the optical drive works fine in the other machine replace the optical drive.
Do reply with results.
