Computer turns on but sometimes does not run

Hello,
My laptop is: Medion P6613
Windows XP (I think)

When I turn on machine (using either mains lead or battery power) sometimes it all turns on OK and works perfectly.

Sometimes it gets as far as the desk top, shows the icons, but nothing actually works. If I press Cont/Alt/Del nothing happens so I'm forced to switch off by holding down on/off switch.

Any ideas please. I'd like to get this sorted before I have a major/permanent failure. Could this be the result of a Microsoft update or is it likely to be hardware failure?

Hello,

Looks like the major failure is imminent. You seem to have a motherboard failure. I suggest that you backup your data before it's too late and see a qualified hands on technician.
