Username pasword urgent

Hi,  I'm trying to recover an old account so I can get a software activation license, but I'm receiving a mixed message that I was hoping could be explained so I can understand. When I try to sign in to the account, I get this message: "Couldn't find your Google account." I tried to set up a new account with the same email address to see if that would work, but I receive the message: "That username is taken.  Try another."  Which is it?  This doesn't make sense to me.  If they can't find it, how can they tell me it's already taken?  If it does exist, why doesn't Google give me the option to recover it?

I don't have also the "Edit" icon next to recovery email in the Yahoo mail box. I'm trying to remove recovery email address via your instructions and replace "refresh to review/emails" in the copied link etc. but unfortunately this email is still there.
Also there is an orange vertical mark / line on the left side of this recovery email address, does it means something?
I would be grateful if you could send me another option to remove recovery email address.

Hi, I want to remove a recovery e-mail from my Yahoo mail account because it goes to an old work address. All the online guidance suggests that this should be straightforward - e.g., go to Yahoo Account Security page, click the Edit icon next to the recovery option you want to delete, click Remove from my account, etc. The problem is ... there is no Edit icon next to the e-mail address I want to delete!

What do I need to do to get rid of this old recovery e-mail address? Help!
