Hi Johnyapple,
If any key is hard to press on the keyboard, it either because of mechanical problems or something could be stuck under the keys of the keyboard stopping its smooth functioning. For the latter case the easy work around is to clean the keyboard of any dust or small particles stuck under the keys. Please check the below mentioned link for steps on how to clean the keyboard on a Sony Vaio Laptop:

If the problem is not fixed after cleaning, your idea of assigning "Backspace" to another key on the keyboard is a good one indeed. Please check the below article for easy steps on how to re-map the keys on the keyboard in Windows 7:
