MY laptop is booting with out a problem but when i log in. my desktop is not there all i see is a black screen. is this a result of virus. and how can i fix it? and if it needs fomating how do i do it.. will formating delete my os?

Unplug the power, remove the battery and then hold the power button for 30 to 60 seconds. Then reattach the power and attempt a boot.
