What kind of connection are you trying to make? If it is FTP, FileZilla would do everything for you.

1. You need a server to connect to.
2. You need to understand network protocol, network addressing and network cabling. Most will be done automatically via computer settings and simple trouble shooting skills.
3. I have never used Linux and Unix inter-changeably, consider looking into Ubuntu or any another Linux based distribution.
