An external USB connected hard drive has two main components:
1. A mass storage USB controller
2. A standard desktop or laptop hard drive
I suspect you have a failure of the hard drive itself. Unless the external drive works with other computer it probably will need replacement. Often you can pry open the case and simply replace the drive itself.
