Unable to startup PC to windows operating system.

Recently facing trouble with my desktop computer (acer aspire x1200) starting up. It all started during a defrag.

Not sure if it's hard drive failure, motherboard or what.

Upon powering up I have 2 options on acer startup screen "del: enter setup" and "f12: boot menu".

So far i can get into the "del: enter setup" no problem. While "f12: boot menu" I am having trouble accessing even though I press the f12 button.

During the times I was able to access "f12: boot menu" it only showed cd-rom below nvidia option a couple times. Though majority of the time it showed no cd-rom. See pics I took.

The black screen is what comes up after selecting nvidia option.

The times in "f12: boot menu" that it showed cd-rom option I had Ubuntu live cd in disc holder. After selecting to boot with cd-rom with Ubuntu it loaded live cd fine but I could not get past Ubuntu start screen. Selecting any of the start options and pressing enter did nothing.

Also while in cmos it shows no cd-rom. Only thing it shows is hard disk and nvidia.

Any thoughts, advice or tips would be great.

The first three BIOS screens suggest a hard disk failure.

Possible it could be motherboard issue since both cdrom and hard disk not showing up?

I vote for HD failure
