NEED URGENT HELP WITH MY SONY VAIO LAPTOP

Hi I need help.
My sony vaio laptop will not play any sounds. it's currently windows 8. I cant hear anything through the speakers. I know I haven't blown them and I've tried adjusting the volume, but still nothing comes out. I'm desperate for help right now as I need my laptop to do school assignments and to communicate with my family overseas and I cant afford to take it to a technician.
The speaker icon in the bottom right of my screen also doesn't show the sound movements when I try play music or videos...
Can someone please help me? I'm not very good with the technical side of computers so please try suggest an accurate solution?
