I have a Sony Vaio VPCSB18GG laptop which has a 512 ATI Radeon Graphics card. Few months ago I was able to play games like Fifa 14, Bioshock Infinite, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance etc on a medium graphics level. Now however, most of the games crash randomly specially Fifa 14 while others tend to slow down while playing cutscenes. The cutscenes freeze and play continuosly. Also, the laptop startup time now takes around 30 mins to boot!

Another problem is that the Intel Rapid Storage Technology tray box displays this message from time to time-

"Your system is reporting one or more events and data may be at risk.

Your system is configured to enable advanced SATA features for optimal power management and increased storage performance."

Any suggestions as to whether or not to format my system? Any virus that may have affected my system?

I suspect you have a hard disk problem. You should run a error check on the hard drive and also read the SMART data from the hard drive. This is the kind of error you get when the drive is marginal and about to fail.

I suggest you have a local PC repair shop clone the drive and replace it.

Good Luck

It would be great if you can help me with how to check errors on the hard drive!

And how much would it cost?

And, don't you think that it may be due to a virus rather than a faulty hard disk?

You can download the free version of Speccy from this site:

https://www.ccleaner.com/speccy/download

Click on the Storage icon and it will display the SMART hard drive status.

Here are the instructions to check for hard drive errors:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/update-a-driver-for-hardware-that-isn-t-working-properly-5c4da477-59fb-355b-45d6-1aa742268c9b

Cost? 100 to 200 dollars US depending on hard disk size and labor cost.

No I don't think it's a virus.
