Do you have a link light when you make a physical connection? If so, then what are the IP addresses of the machines? Are you using static IP address, or DHCP?
You are not trying to connect the two together with the LAN cable are you? If so, you must have a crossover cable, as if you are using a straight cable (think of it as a tin can and string), then the two ears are connected and both are listening!
Use a workgroup hub to simplify things!
