Page numbers should typically be in the header or footer, so reduce the size of your images if they are covering the header or footer and the page number should show. Most dissertation formats require figure numbers and captions- is this what you are referring to? If so, right click the image and select "Insert Caption" from the pop-up menu. Add the figure number, caption, and position it.
