My microsd HC card won't read on PC; asks to format card

Hey there, I have a microsd hc card that I use in my HTC ONE M8 phone, and when I plug it into my card reader on my pc, it says "card not formatted, would you like to format now?" I cannot open any of the files, and I'm scared that formatting the card will erase everything. I'm running windows XP...is there anything I can do to view my files on PC?

PS I cannot transfer via phone to pc, for some reason the HTC ONE M8 doesn't detect when plugged in, but this is an entirely separate issue.

Hi.

Try to change your card reader wire some times its the wire that is faulty.
