Restore factory settings

Hello,
I tried repairing my computer using the f8 key. I wanted to restore factory settings. I chose the option to create a backup file. After the restore was complete I could not find the back file. now I realize more file are missing. I tried to do a restore again but after choosing reair computer the computer statrs in the state its in. It dosen't try to repair it just starts up. I dont have a system disk everything was installed when I bought the machine. I have a gateway gt 5408 can someone help me any ideas?

hi,
when doing the system restore select a date to when the first factory restore was not yet made.
hope this will help you get your files back.
