Photo memory card

in my Nikon cool pix camera, my memory card with about 50 photos began giving me the message "this card cannot be used" even though I had been using it an hour before.
I tried to transfer the photos that were already taken onto my iPad which I have done many times before and the download icon doesn't even show up.
Ideas on how to retrieve the photos?
I will just use a different memory card in the future but I would like the photos I took.
Retrieval ideas?

Hey there CALLENCA. You can connect the memory card to a card reader and try to access it via Linux Live CD/USB, to see if it's recognized properly and if you can get to your photos so that you can back them up. You could also try some of the data recovery software options from this thread here: https://www.tomshardware.com/ Hopefully you're able to get you photos.
