Desktop icons and start menu tiles are gone

Today i switched On my Pc and i know there were more than 40 icons on my desktop many of them were files and some of them were software shortcuts...all of them are gone except few softwares....i even searched them on C:\Program Files (x86) but they are not even there any more.....than my tiles on start menu are also gone...please help there was some serious urgent data i needed.
