Screen backlight dims to dark, but display still visible

My old Dell Inspiron 1200 screen light comes on and the display functions

normally for a while when booted, but then goes dark after about a minute.
Even after it goes dark, however, the screen is still visible although only dimly,

and the display functions normally.
If I restart it, the same routine repeats.
Pls advise.
