go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>System Tools>Device Manager>Sound/Audio. right click on the program that runs your audio (most use AMD Catalyst but could be another) and click scan for hardware changes. if that doesn't work then on Sound/Audio, right click the audio program again, down to Properties>Drivers then update or roll back drivers. let me know if either those work. you might have to download a catalyst program if not.

I'm thinking that it's possibly the wrong driver. If she reinstalls it, wouldn't it just install the same driver that's not working now?

My younger brother had a pretty similiar issue earlier this year. After updating everything possible, it still had nothing. For the life of me, I can't remember the manufacture's name right now but he had to manually download the driver from their site to finally get it to work.

Hi EW
Yes, this often occurs. Usually the drivers can also be obtained from the PC's manufacturer.
Realtek cards are the most popular.

I tried installing Realtek, but it installs for Vista instead of Windows 7.

if you hit the windows button + pause then select Device Manager. click the arrow next to Sound, Audio & Game Controllers and it should tell you in there.
