Whatsapp verification failed

Hello, I have downloaded my whatsapp but everytime I try to verify, they tell me "cannot connect to whatsapp." Then they ask me to edit phone number which I'm very sure is correct. I've deleted and re downloaded several times but all to no avail. Please help.
