Connect three wire to four wire

I have a three wire connector from my computer and cannot connect them to the four wire for the stereo system. I get one channel only. I have connected the shielded cable to the two shielded for the stereo but only one channel plays. What's wrong?

OK, so what colors are in the computer? Unless you have a high end sound card (you failed to mention any specifications BTW!), you have an input, a headphone, and speaker. Tell us what colors they are, we might be able to help. If you have more than five, then it doesn't matter, plug in any speaker device, and configure it with the software for that sound card!
