No Desktop or Start Menu!

Hello,
I have been using W10 for a while with virtually no issues, then all of the sudden literally I printed something came back and I got an error saying "unable to recognize personal desktop". Then my laptop updated, restarted, but I have NO desktop or start menu... When I go to my task list all my apps are there. But I can't access anything through file manager, nothing is there, ALL gone! I have absolutely NO IDEA what happened... Can anyone shed some light? I am not really savvy here and have a court date soon due to an accident I was in, so this could not come at a worse time. I need to get this info to my lawyer and it will not allow me to even upload from my flash drives.. I am desperate..
