In Excel, why do I set date format to custom mm/dd/yy yet have to enter the date as yy/mm/dd for it to appear correctly on the worksheet.

I used to enter mm/dd/yy and it appeared correctly.

I believe that the format of the cell does not influence the way Excel makes a date from the characters you enter (or leave it as a string of characters) : the format only influences the way the value is displayed.
