DVD /RW won't start

Hello,
I have a Gateway notebook with a rw/dvd drive that won't start. When I put in a cd it try's over and over to start but after 3 or 4 times it quits trying. I tried to get my virus software to scan it but it said it was not ready. I deleted the upper and lower filters in the class file, but still did not work
any ideas?

You might try to clean the drive. Dust can cover the lens and make it Impossible to detect the disk

I cleaned it twice but no help. Thanks for the info!
