Can't upgrade to 8.1

My gateway came with windows 8, I was prompted to upgrade a while ago to 8.1. since then, I have had to reset my computer and it is back to running 8. Had no luck upgrading to 8.1. It will download, 'says' it's installing, then 'restores the previous version'.
all updates are current...I would appreciate anyone's help out there who might be able to solve my problem.
