The Grandmother (2021)
In "The Grandmother" movie, the horror is simmered calmly, letting everyday life circulate naturally. There is a fragment of the film that takes place in Paris and another in the hospital; there is also the tutorial that teaches how to change the diapers of an old woman... Susana, the main character, has to leave her Parisian life, in which she works as a model, to return to Madrid. Her grandmother Pilar has just suffered a stroke.
Years ago, when Susana's parents died, her grandmother raised her as if she were her own daughter. Susana needs to find someone to take care of Pilar, but what should be just a few days with her grandmother will turn into a terrifying nightmare. As we already said, the terror in this film is forged through the uneasiness that distills the scenario (a prodigious control of space) and the progressively sinister figure of the old woman until leading to a final stretch where the plot is unleashed, the supernatural ignites, and there is still a gap to fit a complex speech, in a feminine key, about the being in time and old age. Ah, we almost forgot, if you liked the film "REC", you can not miss this gem from the same director!
Candyman (2021)
Since time immemorial, residential projects in Chicago's Cabrini Green neighborhood have been threatened by the story of an alleged serial killer with a hook for a hand which is easily summoned by repeating his name five times in front of a mirror. Today, a decade after Cabrini's last tower was destroyed, visual artist Anthony McCoy and his girlfriend Brianna Cartwright move into a luxury apartment in a now unrecognizable neighborhood filled with millennials and people generally unaware of his dark past.
The film incorporates horror with racial and gentrification themes in a work that revisits the story of the original Candyman (1992), 30 years after the events of the first story. Like the original, Candyman of 2021 tells the story of the famous killer with a hook in his hand, who can be summoned by saying his name 5 times in front of a mirror, but those who dare to call him will have to pay a high price. This film is so scary that even its director, Nia DaCosta, said in an interview for The Guardian that despite having written and directed the film, she has never said the name of the killer 5 times. It is said that when she was watching the auditions, she stopped the video before the actors could say "Candyman" 5 times. And you, would you dare?
A Ghost Story (2017)
The film "A Ghost Story" is a strange dramatic film about ghosts. A minimalist story focuses first on the life of a couple of a musician named only C and his partner M, who hears noises in the modest house where they live in Dallas. Between the tessituras of living together, with disagreements and beautiful moments, the couple remains in the house, even though she wants to move out because she hears noises coming from the piano as if someone was playing it as C does. Days go by, and the musician dies in a car accident. When M goes to the morgue to recognize the corpse, C's body rises with the white blanket over it and returns home, where he accompanies his wife to go through the mourning between tears and the will to continue with his life. "A Ghost Story" is a film whose proposal lies in the stillness of the ghost, who observes everything without being able to say anything or manifest itself beyond moving a few things. Despite this context, the film has the cadence of a good story, with its sad, disturbing, and touching moments, composing a strange love story.
Midsommar (2017)
After the tragic loss of her family and living a relationship in the abyss, Dani is invited by her boyfriend, Christian, to spend the summer in Hårga, Sweden, the birthplace of one of his three friends, Pelle. As Josh and Christian seek to delve deeper into their research on European Midsummer holidays, and Mark seeks to sleep with as many women as possible, the apparent paradise, in the form of a commune, begins to transform into a veritable nightmare where the commune's Midsommar holiday traditions have a different agenda for visitors. While the plot seems simple, it is obvious that things in the peaceful village are not what they seem and that the ritual is going to involve the young guests in some horrible way, the movie has a hypnotic power. And the horror of "Midsommar" lies in the fact that the terror does not wait for the night but happens in broad daylight. "Midsommar" has become the new benchmark of psychological horror. Aster, its director, has managed to combine a story based on human psychology, traditions, and community, all guided by loss and grief.
It Follows (2015)
If you read the title of "It Follows" and you can't tell what the movie is about, the movie has reached its goal. "It Follows", the second film from writer-director David Robert Mitchell ("The Myth of the American Sleepover"), works so well because its creator keeps the viewer gripped throughout. "It Follows" is a ghost story, although the dead don't haunt its suburban protagonists. It's also about teenagers having sex, though it's neither a simple celebration nor a condemnation of underage necking. Instead, "It Follows" prolongs and heightens the potency of high school-age fears to the point of turning them into ancient existential terrors.
Yeah, but what's it about? The story follows Jay, a 19-year-old teenager for whom fall should consist of going to school, hanging out with boys, and spending weekends at the lake. However, after a seemingly innocent sexual encounter, she begins to have horrible visions; she can't shake the feeling that someone or something is after her. As the threat grows, Jay and her friends must somehow escape the terror that follows in their footsteps. The fun, or rather the terror of the story, lies in the disturbing contrast between pleasure and terror, as well as in the moral dilemma the protagonist faces when she has to decide (without being entirely sure if it will work) to get rid of the curse by having sex with someone to pass it on to someone else... yes, as if it were a venereal disease. Another of the film's successes is its independent aesthetic, almost vindictive of the B series, supported by notable doses of originality, which in our opinion, has helped it to be selected at festivals in Sitges and Cannes.
The Snowman (2017)
Against an icy winter landscape backdrop, a sociopath who calls himself "The Snowman Killer" has chosen one person to showcase his methodical and unimaginable talents. That person is none other than the chief investigator of a crime squad.
Detective Harry Hole (Michael Fassbender) will be faced with a less-than-routine homicide case. A woman has been murdered after the first snowfall of the winter. From the beginning of the investigation, the Snowman has taken it upon himself to taunt the cop and continues to do so with each new crime. Fearing that the elusive serial killer is on the run, Detective Hole recruits Katrine Bratt (Rebecca Ferguson), a brilliant co-worker, to help him find a connection between the cases that occurred decades ago and the current ones. If they succeed, they can flush out the psychopath who has been watching them for years. But if they fail, evil will strike again in the next snowfall.
Goodnight Mommy (2014)
"Goodnight Mommy" is a remake of an Austrian film of the same name. The story centers on twin brothers Elias and Lukas, who visit their famous mother in her country house. At the beginning of the film, twins Elias and Lucas are taken by their father to the isolated country house of their mother (Naomi Watts), whom they see for the first time in a long time. It turns out that Mom has secretly undergone some kind of medical procedure that has left her head completely wrapped in bandages. This is disconcerting enough, but as the kids settle in, they begin to notice that there are other things about her that aren't quite right: she's quick to anger, she's become a smoker, she refuses to sing them the song she used to sing at bedtime, and she forbids them from going to the barn out back. Strangest of all, she seems to direct most of her attention to Elias while barely acknowledging Luke's existence. For the brothers, these strange events can only lead to one conclusion: the person they are staying with is actually an imposter who has done something terrible to their mother. But if she's not their mother, who could she be, and does she have plans that could harm the children?
Pet Sematary (2019)
Needless to say, this movie is an adaptation of one of the most terrifying classics of Stephen King. For those unfamiliar with the story, it begins with the Creed family (husband, Louis, wife, Rachel, daughter, eight-year-old Ellie, son, two-year-old Gage, and beloved cat, Church) arriving in the quaint rural town of Ludlow, Maine, where they have purchased a charming, rustic home. However, the house is in the vicinity of a busy highway. If one makes the mistake of stepping off the curb, one runs the risk of being crushed by one of the semi-trailers that incessantly travel that route. So much so that at the back of the property is a pet cemetery where children have been burying their furry friends for decades.
Shortly after settling in, Church is killed by a truck and when Louis doesn't know how to break the news to Ellie, Jud, the next-door neighbor, offers to help bury him. After ensuring that Ellie really loved her kitten, the neighbor takes Louis past the pet cemetery to another area of the woods and tells him that he must bury the feline there. The next day, Church returns, albeit a bit worse for wear: he smells terrible, is in a bad mood, and begins to prowl the house as if he were a monster from a horror movie. It turns out that this cemetery has the power to resurrect the dead, although it is clear that those who return are not the same as those who came back... The day a major tragedy occurs, Louis will not hesitate to bury the little body in that magical cemetery. Needless to say, everything goes wrong when the father's well-intentioned attempt to cheat death quickly turns into the worst of nightmares...
A Quiet Place (2018)
The story follows a family consisting of a married couple and their three children. The eldest daughter is deaf, as is the extraordinary young actress who plays her. The film warns us that we are on "Day 89," which tells us that we are in a post-apocalyptic world. The family moves very slowly through a small town store, grabbing some of the few remaining supplies and some prescription medication for the son, who seems to have the flu. They communicate by signs and are very careful not to make noise. We quickly discern that sound in this world is dangerous. And the danger intensifies in the next sequence when the youngest child finds a toy that makes noise, and... things don't end well. The bulk of "A Quiet Place" takes place more than a year later, when the family is still mourning the little boy's death and the mother is about 38 weeks pregnant. Everyone must prepare for the arrival of a newborn in a world where monstrous creatures kill at the slightest sound.
A Quiet Place 2 (2021)

Just when all hope seemed lost, Regan's radio picks up a signal coming from somewhere. The song "Beyond the Sea" is playing. Convinced that it is some kind of signal someone is trying to send, Regan decides to go off alone to try to find out what the song means since no one believes her. Realizing this, Evelyn begs Emmett to accompany them to locate the young woman. What follows is a deadly quest for survival in hopes of finally breaking free from fear.
Evil Dead (2013)
Ashley "Ash" Williams, his girlfriend, and three friends wander into the woods to a cabin for a fun night out. There they find an old book, the Necronomicon, whose text awakens the dead when read aloud. Without realizing it, the friends unleash a torrent of evil and must fight for their lives or become one of the evil dead. Ash sees his friends become possessed and must make a difficult decision before dawn to save his own life in the first installment of Sam Raimi's terrifying trilogy.

The story becomes more and more sinister as the atrocious secrets of the Armitage family are revealed...
Suspiria (2018)
Luca Guadagnino's film, a remake of Dario Argento's famously gory 1977 film, reuses much of that story, namely a coven of witches running a German dance school, and embellishes it with inventions of its own and very well achieved. The plot of "Suspiria", 2018, centers on Susie, an American student who auditions for a dance school in Berlin and is selected. The film is set in the year 1977. The dance school is in shock because a student named Patricia has mysteriously disappeared. The story shows Patricia in a consultation with Dr. Klemperer. There the young woman claims that the academy is actually run by witches. Although this is explained later, the witches imprison Patricia and feed on her life force. In short, anyone who tries to expose the school will be punished.
The Babadook (2014)
The reason "The Babadook" has been called one of the scariest horror movies of recent times is that it is not a movie about a monster. Instead, it is a movie about a mother. "The Babadook" tells the story of a woman named Amelia who cannot recover from her husband's death. He died while driving her to the hospital to give birth to their son, Samuel. Amelia is not prepared to be a single mother, but she does everything she can to give Samuel a loving upbringing. However, Samuel spends his days devising ways to hunt imaginary monsters that only he can see. When a disturbing storybook called "The Babadook" appears in his house, Samuel becomes convinced that the Babadook is the creature that has been haunting him. Then his hallucinations become uncontrollable, and his behavior becomes unpredictable and violent. Amelia, increasingly frightened, is forced to medicate him. But suddenly, she begins to feel a sinister presence around her that leads her to believe that her son's fears could be real...
Saw (2004)
The film begins in a locked public restroom. A clock on the wall reads 2 o'clock. Two men are chained by shackles to opposite walls. In the center of the floor is a corpse in a pool of blood. Near the corpse are a revolver, a tape recorder, and a saw. The men are Adam and Dr. Lawrence Gordon. The corpse remains a mystery for a long time, but the recording proves useful. It informs both men that Dr. Gordon must kill Adam before 6 o'clock, or his wife and daughter will be killed. A parallel story chronicles the efforts of two detectives to track down the Jigsaw Killer, who has delivered deadly ultimatums to previous victims. The detectives are David Tapp and Steven Sing, who must work against the clock to stop the killer from killing again. If you like this movie, you can enjoy Saw I, II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII.
