Cant open hd

i have got a 160gb portable hard disc. my hardisk is visible in My Computer( i can see what is in it) but when i try 2 open folder or file i cant.
it says e:\ The request can not be performed because of an I/O device error.
it is the same on my friends computer also. Does someone know the solution?
i have important data on it.

Hi there,

Where have you positioned the jumper?you must put it either as slave or cs(computer select).
