No sound on desktop

I downloaded Windows 8.1 but now have no sound. Have tried all options that I have been able to find or complete. Need help

did you try deleting the hardware an then restarting Windows so that it finds the "new" hardware in installs the required drivers?

No I did not but I am not certain where I was when I found that many of my apps had been stopped during the upgrade to 8.1 I followed the instructions and restarted all that it would let me. somewhere in there I got the sounds back! I still have a few more issues with apps that I could not get restarted but I can live with that for now. Thanks for the fast response.
