Hard disc not accessing

Hello,
My hard disc is detecting at bios, but it cannot access. why???? When that hard disc is connected as a slave it becomes very difficult to enter into the master's os. I had also tried to format the same, but
at the time of formating it shows that the disc cannot be accessed.... WHY?????? can anyone help me?????????
