Can you recover WhatsApp messages from previosly DEAD phone?

Hi.

My old phone went completely dead and then several months later i got a new phone and installed whatsapp from scratch (using same sim). Although i seldom used it.

Managed to get old phone working few days back. Is there a method of seeing the backlog of messages sent to me while phone was dead?

I tried reinstating whatsapp on old one (had to re-register using whatsapp pin code message) and then i got the chats from the point BEFORE the phone went dead, but the messages didnt update anything sent to me 'inbetween phone being dead and registering app on new phone' later.

Is there anyway to recover such messages? Or is it lost forever
