HP w2207 doesn't recognize WD 500 GB external

Hello,
Does anyone have a solution for when the HPw2707 vista doesn't recognize a Western Digital 500 GB external drive? It shows up under disk management and when I go to unplug the drive i get "safe to unplug WD etc", but the drive does not show up in the icon/drive menu. Any thoughts??
Desperate for assistance! JC

Dear Sir,

You will have to format the hard drive in disk management if it's the first time you are using the hard drive,

When formatted, it will show up in your my computer
