does it give you the options when you hit f8 when you boot up to go into safe mode

Yes, It does give options but the options that normally takes you to a dos prompt does not work. The machine simpley reboots.

if your system is that screwed, then you may need to remove the hard drive, slave it to a computer that has good anti virus software. go on line with that computer and get your hard drive scanned that way.
