Yeah, I used to have the same problem. Was more than annoying.
Just put it on something like "Check for updates, ask me before downloading". Otherwise, I don't think there are updates every day, but only once a week (not sure AT ALL, but anyway not updated daily), so you also could turn it off and check for updates every week or something.
But first of all you really should move to IE 7 or Firefox 3.0. Surfing the Internet with IE 6 is way too dangerous.
