Hello edison,

I had the same problem for almost 2 months and today I accidentally fixed it. If in sound and audio devices volume tab it says no audio device and is grayed out where you can't click place icon on task bar then try this SIMPLE solution.
Go to: control panel
Go to: double click sound and audio devices>>place cursor in volume tab and scroll wheel on mouse and the grayed area changes, no audio device goes away and the name of your sound card appears. If this happens then it is fixed.
Now all you have to do is:
Go to: sound tab and voice tab to see if you need to scroll mouse for grayed area to change and sound card to come on. If you do the click apply and OK.
DON"T click apply and OK in the volume tab until you go to sound tab and voice tab. Click apply and OK in these 2
tabs and then volume.
Good Luck

U have an audio device = sound card), but it's not installed. To install it u need a driver.
Tell the brand and the model of ur computer (for Dell, PB, Fujitsu, Medion tell the S/N)
If ur computer is no-branded, tell the name and the model of ur MoBo
Then I'll probably be able to give u a link to download the driver of this sound card.

I was recently given a computer, a dell from 2001? I installed Windows XP Home Edition service pack 1 and now, like all these ppl have no sound. I actually tried the scrolling thing, but as I thought, it did not work. From what I can from the one program you recommended, there is a SantaCruz sound card? but I have no idea how to get the sound to work. I have found many programs that all seem to be of no help at all afterwards. I keep getting messages saying that my sound card may be in use, and that I don't have an audio mixer installed. Please help, this computer is for my children to play games on....thanks!
