Tv as monitor

Hello,
I have been trying without success to use my phillips flat screen tv as a monitor for compaq desktop. I am using the dvi from the back of the computer with an adapter to a cable plugging in to HDMI on the tv. I have followed the instructions on the tv manual but no signal or joy. Am I missing a video or graphics card. Feedback greatly appreciated.
