HDMI between laptop and tv

Hello,

I'm using a HP laptop G60-458DX Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit Pentium Dual Core with graphics memory of 1759MB and Sony Bravia 32" S-series and i want to connect them using a HDMI cable. I bought a 1.8 meters of cable in a computer shop and i bought the cheapest available. No sound, No video can be seen. I read the operating manual of the SONY TV and yet nothing happens. I tried the FN+F4 key but still no output to the SONY.. Can the HDMI cable i bought plays a big factor on this kind of set-up.
