is there a cooling fan on the card?
Has it failed, or is it clogged with dust? That graphics card must be five or so years old, and the fans don't last forever. If I'm right you're probably better off getting a cheap replacement AGP card - even the cheapest nVidia card available now will have better performance than a Geforce4 MX.
But - try reinstalling the drivers first
