Loss desktop icons and start button

Hello, I bought my daughter a gateway last month for school. Sometimes when she powers up she just gets the gateway screen, no icons or even a start button (windows vista). I brought it back to best buy and they tested it and said it was ok. My computer guy says its the mother board. Gateway help is non-existent

this is wrong information if it was the motherboard this

will not have powered up
