yes it is possible to partition the hard drive without formatting it, but with all partitioning there is always the possibility of data corruption, so backup your data.
There is various software out there that partitions hard drives without reformatting ie Partition Commander Partition Magic Acronis Disk Directors Suite to name but a few.
There is also Hirens Boot disc 9.5 which has a partitioning program on it. I have not used it myself so I cant tell you much about it but a link page is at
