Burning videos onto discs

Hello,
I've being trying to burn a video of a birthday that i was asked to film onto a disc so that it will work on dvd players. So far it hasn't worked for me. I've been usin dvdr discs and using windows media player to burn the video footage onto the discs. It doesn't work on any of my dvd players. What am i doing wrong?
