Deleted windows word 2003

Hello,
i have removed office word 2003 from the computer by mistake when removing/installing.
Ihave all my work still on the computer but cannot open any of my files. its looking for the install files.
will i need to purchase office word 2003 again and will this be sufficient to operate my files or willall my work be lost.
my computer is an e machine. with windows xp
