Word document ALWAYS opens up in Adobe

Whenever I click on a saved word document or even download a word document from an email (which they are always .doc files)... Adobe ALWAYS opens up and says

"Adobe Reader cannot open up "December.doc" because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded)"

So I ALWAYS have to close out of that... right click... open with... word...
in an email - the download box comes up, I close out of adobe, click open containing folder, then right click... open with... word.

Is there anyway to change this - and make Word open up - instead of adobe?!?!? the files say .doc files - and it has a picture of a word document as the icon - but no matter what - adobe always opens up!

I have the same problem and it began only recently. What is the solution?!?
