Search for audio driver

Hello,
i only recently installed Linux Ubuntu on my Toshiba laptop...now the problem is that i dont have a sound/audio driver that works, at least none of the ones shown on the system as its sound drivers work when playing back. i need to know where and what (particular) driver would best suit my system. thanx in advance.b.
