A DVD drive has nothing to do with RAID controller hardware/software (RAID is related to your hard drives). Have you also installed some other hardware?

I have an external hard drive that was hooked to my old computer which I also have hooked up to the new computer. Sheesh I feel like such an idiot! How do I correct this issue?

An external hard drive would not need/use RAID software/hardware as RAID is used with multiple hard drives to improve performance and/or provide data redundancy.
Is the DVD also an external drive?
If it's an internal drive I would check the data cable and if it's an IDE device the jumpers. If you have two IDE devices attached to ONE cable then you need the jumpers set to master and slave. (1 master and 1 slave). Perhaps these are wrong and the OS is giving you some strange RAID related error message.
If it's a SATA device I would move the cable to another of the motherboard's SATA sockets.
