You need to adjust the screen settings to send the display to the external monitor. If you right click on an empty area of the desktop screen you will get a dropdown menu click on "Graphics options" you should be able to select the external monitor there. That's assuming you are using an Intel video adapter. You might also need to switch displays by using a Function key (F8 + Fn) on my Dell - probably someother key on your laptop.
