Reformating or changing language

i have an e machine laptop given to me by Japanese friend,my problem is the laptop was in Japanese language ,my question is this ,is it possible to change it or reformat it in enlish without losing my documents ,images ,music and everything in the laptop?plese can you help....... desperately in need.....

What is the model,series and os in use on the laptop?What you mentioned are possible ,please provide more information.
