HP pavilion dv4121AP wont turn on.

my laptop wont turn on. last night we used it and went to bed with the laptop left on. this morning it was dead. i can't get it to turn on... when i press the power button the icon (lighting bolt) flashes 3 times. i bought a new power cord today (my old one was held together with tape.) and it still wont turn on.

Was adapter connected to it or running on battery?

the adapter was plugged in, but because the cord is faulty it could have changed to battery power.
