Unable to connect to Net NTT ADSL

Hello,

I am trying to make an internet connection in Japan via an NTT ADSL modem using the LAN port. The connection works just fine on the borrowed Japanese laptop running Windows XP I am using to make this inquiry, but when I plug the ethernet cable into my Compaq, the LAN light fails to come up on the modem and my Compaq fails to see the modem. NTT tech support is of no help since the problem appears to lie in the configuration of my computer. I have been using the LAN connection successfully in Toyoko Inns. Any help anyone can offer would be most gratefully appreciated.
