This often happens when someone tries to install XP on a modern laptop with SATA hard drives. Older versions of Windows XP don't have the SATA driver needed to use the enhanced SATA controller on the motherboard. Search this site for "slipstream" the process for modifying the Windows CD and "nlite" the program use to do the modification. Some BIOS's allow you to turn off the enhanced driver. But, I don't think HP has that in the BIOS.
